While most of us are familiar with detox diets that help cleanse waste and impurities from our bodies, you may not be familiar with a skin detox.
Why a skin detox?
Our skin helps our body eliminate waste and impurities, mainly through perspiration. During warmer times of the year when perspiring is at an all time high, your skin may develop issues to compensate in trying to rid the body of impurities.
A skin detox supports skin's efforts to rid the body of waste and toxins, and can result in your skin looking and feeling better. A skin detox can be exactly what you need if you are noticing problems with your skin. Signs you may need a skin detox include:
- Dull, sallow skin
- Uneven skin tone or texture
- Oily skin
- Fine lines and sagging skin
- Dry or sensitive skin
In a nutshell, if your skin is not looking as good as you'd like or you are noticing more issues than normal, a summer skin detox may help your skin look more healthy and vibrant.
Skin detox tips...
Here are some strategies for your summer skin detox. Try any (or all!) of these tips out to create a fresh, radiant appearance. Pick and choose as you wish!
DETOXIFYING MUD MASK
Dead Sea mud masks help pull impurities and waste from your skin. They can help unclog pores and exfoliate, revitalizing the look of dull skin. Mud Masks are great purifiers to use anytime.
For a Summer Detox, slather mud mask on a little thicker than usual. Let sit for 10-15 minutes. Then step into a steaming hot bath. Allow the steam to further work the ingredients into your skin. After an additional 5-10 minutes, rinse off. Your skin will feel smooth and fresh.

DRINK MORE WATER
Drinking plenty of water is important for detoxing your body and your health in general. When we do not get enough water it taxes our internal waste removal systems. Support this process by getting your daily quota, aim to sip half your ideal weight in ounces of room temperature water each day. (For example if your ideal weight is 140 pounds, aim to drink 70 ounces.)
For a skin detox boost, in addition to sipping your daily quota of room temperature water, sip plain hot water every 10-15 minutes throughout the day for one week.
Ensure your water is pure. Consider using a water filter or purchasing bottled water from a good source (our favorite is Dasani).
For an extra detox boost (and to break the boredom) add some lemon to your water. Lemons naturally promote a healthy digestion, which in turn will support your skin.
JUNK THE JUNK
Avoid "congesting" foods such as animal fats, dairy products, white bread, fast food, and sugar. Be sure to eat as clean and healthy as possible. Make a goal of eating lots of fresh berries, fruits, and vegetables. Be sure to include orange, yellow, and red fruits and vegetables in your diet for a Beta Carotene super glow booster. Supplement with plenty of foods such as berries, papaya, squash, sweet potatoes, persimmons, and oranges.
UP THE TEA
Herbal teas can do wonders to support your body and, in turn, your skin. Opt for teas including nettle, ginger, dandelion, and sarsaparilla root for maximum skin support. Be sure to drink at least two cups a day of these types of herbal teas for at least one week.

SWEAT IT OUT
Vigorous exercise gets your heart pumping and your skin sweating, helping to cleanse impurities from your body. Exercise to the point of sweating at least five times a week. Turn up the heat with a heat yoga or spa session!
EXFOLIATING IS ESSENTIAL
Too often exfoliating is overlooked, especially in the busy summer. Regular exfoliation is absolutely essential for vibrant, glowing skin. For a skin detox, consider upping your exfoliation game by exfoliating a few more times than normal. Depending on your skin sensitivity you could try every 2 to 3 days for a 10 day period. (Be sure to monitor skin closely so as not to burn your skin.)
