4 Essential Tools for DIY Skincare Projects

Making your own "DIY Beauty" products is fun, easy, and rewarding.

From lip scrubs to masks - there are a wide variety of skincare goodies you can make at home.

Most of the equipment you need for DIY projects will be found in your own kitchen, at a local discount store, or purchased online.

Before digging into any skincare recipe make sure your workspace is clean, wiped down and sanitized. If you have children or pets be sure they know to steer clear of any toxic ingredients. And you should always wear a fresh pair of latex gloves when mixing anything with water to keep contamination down. Latex gloves can be sourced online at Amazon or may be found at your local pharmacy.

Of course you need a way to measure - accurate measuring spoons and cups are essential but what other tools do I recommend that you might not have thought of?

Equipment

Below you will find a list of my 4 essential pieces of equipment for making skincare projects at home.

French Coffee Press

A French Coffee Press is useful for infusing botanicals into water. To use, the botanicals are placed in the bottom of the heat resistant glass cannister. Then hot water is poured over the botanicals.

When done steeping, the built-in plunger in the top of the Press allows the infused water to be easily drained away.

I use this method for making bath teas and soaks, and for recipes that call for infused water.

Glass Canning Jars

Glass Canning Jars, with their tight-fitting lids, make great storage containers for dried botanicals, single use sugar scrubs, lip scrubs, and for infused waters. They come in a variety of sizes and can easily be cleaned and sanitized. Be sure to purchase heat resistant jars whenever possible.

Cheesecloth

Cheesecloth can easily be purchased at your local grocery store. This is used to help strain used botanicals away from infused water after the infusion process is complete if you are not already using a French Press.

Glass Mist Bottles & Plastic or Metal Funnel

Glass Mist Bottles are preferable over plastic to avoid plastic seeping into your preparations. Glass bottles with matching mist tops and mini funnels can be easily sourced online via Amazon or Etsy. Purchase a variety of sizes to keep on hand.

To reduce the risk of contamination, prepare your bottles.

Wash and rinse thoroughly, sanitize in boiling in water for 10 minutes.

CAREFULLY remove with tongs and allow to cool. Dry the exterior. Rinse inside the bottle with 70% Isopropyl Alcohol or Vodka after boiling.

It is ESSENTIAL for the bottle be completely dry before using. Place the bottle upside-down on paper towels and allow to drip dry for at least 24 hours before using.

Just as with cooking, using the proper tools can have a big positive impact on the results of your skincare preparations. Be sure all of your tools are kept for DIY Beauty recipes only and that they are always clean and sanitized prior to use.
